Brief History

Having made such tremendous progress both physically and spiritually the Church began to yearn for independence, especially after such a long connection with Olowogbowo. Endowed with highly dedicated men and women who continued to support the Church morally and financially, a request that Yaba Society be granted a self-governing Circuit Status, contained in a letter dated 5th April, 1961 was addressed to Olowogbowo Circuit Quarterly meeting under Superintendent Rev. A. S. Solarin, M. B. E. At the Circuit Quarterly meeting on Friday 6th October, 1961, it was unanimously carried that Yaba Society be granted grade ‘A’ Circuit Status from 1st September, 1962. On Tuesday, 16th January 1962, the same request was considered at the 83rd Annual Synod of the Methodist Church Western Nigeria District held at Ilesha. It was unanimously accepted that Yaba be created a Circuit with a few of the out-lying Societies. These were Oshodi Society, Abule-Ijesha Society, Imolerere (Imegbon) Society, Iju Society and Abule Oja Society. It is worthy of note that Oshodi and Iju are now Circuits while other Local Churches that make up the Yaba Circuit presently are Bashua, Egu Sector (Iwaya Oko Agbon, Unilag Pedro, Ilaje Bariga and Ikate Ebute) Paseda, and Akowonjo.

And so in September 1962, ninety three years after its foundation, the Church became a Circuit.  Rev. E. A. O. Idowu had the grace and blessing of leading the Church to the attainment of a self-supporting and self-governing Circuit and thus became  its first Superintendent.

Rev. M. F. Sodipo returned to the Yaba Society in 1966 as the Superintendent and Minister in Charge of the Society.  Rev. E. S. Ogunyemi and Late Rev. E. O. Sofodu worked as his assistants.  During the period he became the Chairman of the Lagos District, while he continued as the Superintendent of Yaba Circuit.  He later became the Archbishop of Lagos because the manse became the residence of the Archbishop and  the Diocese.  Ministers who served in the Circuit were Revd. S. Ola Makinde and  Revd. Luke Odubanjo, who are currently the Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria and Bishop, Diocese of Egba/Yewa respectively.  Others are Rt. Revd. G. A. Bamgbose Rtd, The Most Revd. Ogunyemi Rtd, Rt. Revds M. O. Akinwale, A. A.  Adewale, I. A. Olawuyi and a host of others.

It should be noted that following the inspection of the Circuits within the Diocese of Lagos Mainland on specific parameters by a Committee set up by the Diocese, Yaba Circuit was adjudged the best organized Circuit in the Diocese and was presented with a beautiful plaque in recognition of this enviable status.
