OVERVIEW OF THE DIOCESE

Lagos Diocese covered a vast area from Lagos Island to Badagry axis, all the city circuits and to Ikorodu axis. The coming together of the entire Methodists as one body at the reconciliatory service held in 1990 increased the number in the then Lagos Diocese. The need to make the WORD of God spread evenly to every part of the Diocese out of the existing Lagos Diocese became imperative.

The then Diocese of Lagos was described as being too large and too wide in size for effective administration and development hence, the Synod of 1993 held at Palm Avenue Circuit saddled the Standing committee of the Diocese to look into this problem.
The Standing Committee considered the following reasons for the creation of a diocese in her meeting of June 1993:

  • Effective spiritual oversight.

  • Financial viability of the circuits that would come together.

  • Geographical contiguity among others.

In light of the vastness of the area covered by the then Lagos Diocese (18 Circuits and special areas) the committee recommended that the following diocese be carved out:

  • Diocese of Lagos consisting of 5 circuits: Olowogbowo, Ereko, Ikoyi, Badagry and Ado – Odo circuits to be created a Diocese and it should be at Olowogbowo.

  • Diocese of Lagos Mainland consisting of 7 circuits viz; Yaba, Ago – Ijaiye, Palm Avenue, Ikate, City Mission, Odi – Olowo and Ijesha – Tedo be created a Diocese.

  • Diocese Of Ikorodu consisting of 7 circuits viz; Ikorodu, Agege, Shomolu, Bariga, Oshodi, Igbobi/Folami special area be created and known as the Diocese of Ikorodu.

A Committee for the proposed Diocese of Lagos Mainland was set up by the federating circuits to work out the modalities for the implementation of the proposal in February 1994 and reported her readiness to be a diocese at the Standing Committee held on the 5th of March, 1994 at Hoare’s memorial Methodist Church, Sabo – Yaba.
Hence the Diocese of Lagos Mainland was created at the 1994 Methodist Church Nigeria Conference and was inaugurated on January 12, 1995
